After a long travel day on Saturday, May 25th, we finally got settled in and got to explore the city on Monday! We are staying at a hostel called Haws Urban in Sepolia, Athens. I am traveling with my best friend from school, participating in various volunteer programs during our three week stay. I am helping an non-profit organization outreach to universities in America to promote an abroad experience in England. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Monday, we started the day with a complimentary breakfast that included mochachinos, toast, greek yogurt, greek salad, cereal and eggs. We got to enjoy this meal with some other volunteers staying at the hostel with us. They have been very kind and given us lots of advice which we greatly appreciated! After breakfast, we got ready for the day and began our orientation with our in country support, Kira. We got to learn about the history of Greece, more about IVHQ and the Impact Team, and learned where we would be placed for our volunteer programs. Ava also arrived on Sunday, so she has been a great addition to our group and we&#8217;re all figuring it out together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following this, we went to the metro station to get our MetroCards and learn about the metro system! As confusing as it was at first, we got the hang of it very quickly! Once we got back, we enjoyed lunch provided by the hostel and were able to relax a bit. We ended up going to a park nearby, where we saw the statue of Athena and could practice some more on the metro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our last excursion for the day was a tour of the city! We had an amazing tour guide who showed us around, teaching us more about the history and modern culture. We got our first look at the Acropolis, and we can&#8217;t wait to go back to explore more and shop around at all the street vendors. After the tour, we walked around the city some more and then finally got to dinner at a rooftop restaurant with an amazing view of the Acropolis. One of the cultural shocks we have experienced is how late dinner is! Dinner is typically served around 9-10pm. and if you eat at 7&#8230; you will get looked at funny! They have a very vibrant nightlife, even on weekdays, that includes live music and dancing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another cultural difference is that everyone here smokes cigarettes. It is even common to see kids smoking, and it is seen more as a social activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today was an amazing day of learning and exploring, and I can&#8217;t wait fa-angle-right\"><\/i><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Day 2 &amp; 3<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 2: To start the day on Tuesday, when Dayna got back from her placement, we went to the Academy of Athens! Unfortunately, it was closed due to a congress meeting, but we had a fun time looking around. We are definitely going to go back so that we can see the inside! The Academy of Athens is the national academy of Greece and the highest research establishment in the country. Established in 1926, its founding principle can be traced back to the historical Academy of Plato. We then walked around the streets of Panepistimio, where we wandered into a store, Attica. When I tell you this was the largest store I have ever been into&#8230; I&#8217;m not joking. There were about 5 floors packed with designer clothing, shoes, handbags, and perfumes. There were also cafes and restaurants mixed in!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After we got back and ate lunch, we headed into Thiseio, which is the stop that takes us near the Acropolis! We walked around looking at the shops and wandering around. We ended up buying some matching rings, where the sales clerk convinced us to buy 2! One includes the sun symbol from the unofficial flag of Greece, while the other was handmade with a blue stone native to Greece! The blue stone reminds us of the beautiful skies, blue buildings, and the sea!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We went into a church in the city center, the Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens, where they have candles that you can light while you pray, which is why it is always open to the public! It took exactly 20 years to build because everything, inside and out, was handmade! It opened in 1862 and is right next to The Church of the Virgin Mary Gorgoepekoos and Saint Eleutherius, which is believed to have been built in the early 13th century!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As we continued to wander around the streets, we came across Syntagma Square, where the changing of the guards occurs in front of the Hellenic Parliament. We didn&#8217;t watch the guards change, but we definitely want to go back to watch! Further from there, we got to the National Gardens! We didn&#8217;t want to walk around too much because we thought we might get lost, haha! So we decided to relax on a bench and will come back another day! From the gardens, we thought we would be able to get back to the metro without a map&#8230; but we were wrong! We ended up walking in a circle and were still 16 minutes away from the metro! So, after we put it into Google, it was smooth sailing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 3: Wednesday was a more chill day! We didn&#8217;t do much until we went into the town of Anafiotika. It is known as a hidden gem under the Acropolis and also known as an island vibe on the land! Built around 1840 by builders from the Cycladic Island of Anafi, came to Athens to work on King Otto&#8217;s palace. They built their homes in an architectural style to mimic their homes in the Cycladic islands. Today, fewer than 50 houses remain original, while many of the others were destroyed due to archaeological excavations in the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After walking around and taking some photos, we got some gelato! I got orange sherbet! They give you a small swig of lemonade before you get your gelato as a way to cleanse your palate. Back at the hostel, the dinner was not very good&#8230; so we took a trip to McDonalds! It was very similar to the one in the States; however, they did have &#8220;Deluxe potato wedges&#8221; as another option for fries!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we got back, we 5<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 4: On Thursday, my day didn&#8217;t quite get started until noon&#8230; In the hostel, we are in bunk beds that are divided with thin walls, kinda making a cubby of your bed! While this sounds great and private, it doesn&#8217;t allow much light to come through&#8230; therefore leading me to not wake up until Dayna got back from her placement! Anywhoooo, after I got up, I went for a light run in the gym! It felt great to get a run in since it had been over a week! I made sure to take it easy tho as we have been walking a ton, and I didn&#8217;t want to be sore. If only I knew what was to come in the evening&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After my run, we did some laundry, I took a shower, and we walked to get some coffee. I&#8217;ve noticed that their coffee is not as sweet and often has a &#8220;burnt&#8221; flavor. It&#8217;s the only iced coffee I&#8217;ve had so far tho! We then ate lunch and relaxed some at the hostel until we had a group meeting at 5. Kira held the meeting to say goodbye to 3 of the people in the group \ud83d\ude41 and welcome our newest volunteer! We all talked about how our weeks were going and enjoyed catching up with each other! After the meeting, Dayna, Ava, and I decided to go on a sunset hike to a lookout!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If only we knew what this hike was going to entail&#8230; we didn&#8217;t exactly realize what mountain\/hill we were hiking until we were already committed lol. Long story short, there is a gondola that takes you to the top. We DID NOT use said gondola. Anyways, after a very long and steep hike, we made it to the top, and it was so worth it! The view was amazing, although it was cloudy, so we couldn&#8217;t see much of the sunset. The top was a little crowded, so we made sure on the way up to stop and take pictures!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we were on the way down, we decided to meet up with some of the other Impact group, where they were having one of their last dinners here. We also walked a little farther than needed to meet up with them (oops), but eventually we found them! On the way, we saw so many cars parked on the sidewalks! This is definitely something we weren&#8217;t expecting, but it happens everywhere! Pedestrians also do not have the right of way when walking in the streets, so we all see why we need travel insurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After hanging out for a little while, some of the group decided to go out while Dayna and I came back to the hostel for dinner, mind you, this is at about 10:30 at night. What did I say, they eat dinner late! The dinner wasn&#8217;t the best, so Dayna and I headed over to a small restaurant near our hostel so that Dayna could try her first Gyro! Let&#8217;s just say they have become a staple in our diet ever since! We then came back and chilled for the rest of the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 5: I finally got my placement! In the morning, Abby and I went to our placement. It was a cute little office where we were able to work in the conference room together while he took some calls in the other room. I have been delayed starting my placement as my manager has been having some health issues, but thankfully, everything is okay! I am working with Imagine Heritage on their Florence project. They are a non-profit organization that prioritizes culture and heritage in their community. Abby and I have been asked to reach out to colleges in the U.S. to see if they would be interested in a collaboration with their Florence study abroad opportunity. To do this, Abby has been making some deliverables while I research colleges to reach out to and email them based on how I feel this opportunity would best help them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not exactly what either of us was expecting to do, but we are going to have a call with them soon so that we can get some more clarification. We thought we would be helping the local community a little more directly and get to work more with the Greek people, but we are trying to make the best of our situation. We are also hybrid, so we only go into our placement once a week, which has also been an added challenge when trying to communicate with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After I got back and had some lunch, Dayna and I decided to try out some thrift shops I had seen online! The first one we went to was a little more overwhelming (and expensive), so after looking around for a little while, we continued to another. The next one we went to was super cute! It was more Y2K vibes and a little expensive too, but we did end up getting a few pins as a reminder of this trip! We then continued into the shops of Montestruaki, but knew we shouldn&#8217;t get home too late as we had a big weekend to plan!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we got back, it was time to get to planning! Ava, Dayna, and I wanted to become island girls for the weekend! After booking three ferry rides and one night in a hotel, we were ready to go to Agistri and Egina! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we had it all planned, we headed out for Talia, &amp; 7<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 6: ISLAND DAY!!! After an early wake-up time and getting on the metro to the docs, we were successfully on our way to Agistri! This is a smaller island right next to Egina that often gets overlooked. Thankfully, Abby had suggested that we try it out, and good thing we did! This day has been our favorite so far!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After getting off the ferry, we found our hotel and got ready for a relaxing day on the beach! The water was so clear, no matter how far you went out, and the island was not too busy. We spent all afternoon lying in the sun and taking pictures. Once our room was ready, we got changed and headed out for some lunch and shopping! We had the best gyros of our whole trip for lunch!! The taziki was more garlicky than normal, and that made all the difference! After our stomachs were full and we successfully found some souvenirs, we all got back to the hotel room to shower and get ready for dinner. We wanted to take cute pictures on the island before sunset, and we definitely achieved our vision! We also got some of the worst gelato of our whole trip, but if that&#8217;s the worst part about this island&#8230; I&#8217;ll take it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found a cute restaurant on the water to eat dinner, and then enjoyed having a quiet room to enjoy by ourselves after a long, tiring week! Although the hotel was not anything special, it was exactly what we needed to get a good night&#8217;s rest and to have some alone time from being in a room with 10 girls all week!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was a slight mosquito infestation (sorry, Ava!), but we did manage to make it! The wifi in the room wasn&#8217;t working, and so the only way we had service was if we sat outside on the balcony of our room&#8230; hence where all the mosquitoes were! Fortunately, I didn&#8217;t get one bite&#8230; while Ava was being eaten alive and has since been doing anything to get the itching to go away (even rubbing vinegar all over her legs!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 7: The breakfast at the hotel was SOOOO good! Everything about this island was just so amazing! We could see the boats from where we were eating breakfast&#8230; and we didn&#8217;t realize that ours was a speedboat to the next island. So as we were sitting there eating breakfast, we were surprised that our boat wasn&#8217;t there yet because it was supposed to be leaving in about 5 minutes. At this point, we decided we should just head over, where we saw that the boat we were looking at the whole time was ours! We had to run onto the loading doc and before we were even seated on the boat, we were already moving!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We got to Aegina around 9:10 in the morning on a Sunday, so pretty much everything was closed once we got there. We wandered around the streets a little and looked at some historic landmarks. We then decided to make a plan for the day, and the first thing on the agenda was to go to the Archaeological Museum of Aegina and see the Temple of Apollo. This is still an active site they are uncovering, and it was so amazing to see how people used to live. There was a lot of clay pottery that they had found, and it was interesting learning how they were able to tell how and why things were used and where they came from! After some time at the museum and exploring, we sat ourselves down on the beach and spent another relaxing afternoon!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we felt like we had been cooked enough by the sun, we got changed and headed into town for lunch and shopping! We knew we wanted to get some seafood, and we had a lot of time to kill before taking the ferry back to Athens. While we were on the way to a restaurant, we ran into a girl who was solo traveling as a gift to herself for her college graduation! After talking to her for a while, we agreed to meet back up after we got food so that we could all go shopping together!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We found a restaurant on the water, and Dayna and I decided to split our meals. I got a shrimp dish, and she ordered salmon pasta! This has been the best food we have had the whole time being there! We can&#8217;t recommend going to the islands enough and are thinking about going back next weekend&#8230; (stay tuned!) We didn&#8217;t mind sitting at the restaurant for a little extra time, though, because we are all carrying around 20-pound backpacks with all our stuff in them for the weekend! At some points, I thought my shoulders were going numb. However, now that we were all stuffed and had gotten feeling back in our shoulders, it was time to do some shopping! We met back up with the girl we had met earlier and just wandered around for a few hours. We all agreed that we liked Agistri better and that it was a little less touristy, but we&#8217;re glad we ventured to Aegina so that we could get the feel of another island and get a more historical perspective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After some shopping, we knew exactly what we all needed&#8230; gelato!! I knew that I wanted to try the pistachio gelato because Aegina is known for its pistachios! I never thought I liked pistachio-flavored things, but I think that this is now one of my favorite flavors! After the gelato, we were all pretty tired, so we just sat on a bench and waited for our ferry. It was a beautiful night, and we couldn&#8217;t have asked for better weather this whole trip!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After about an hour ferry ride back, we took the metro all the way back to the hostel, where we had burgers and fries waiting for us!! There was also a bunch of new people who had arrived during the day but were asleep by the time we got back. 9<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 8: Monday morning was another slow morning. I went and got some breakfast and have been continuing to get to know the new people. We miss everyone who left, but we are learning to meet new people and make connections! I then went on a run and got ready for the day. We were all still tired from our long weekend, so we wanted to have a relaxing afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After lunch, we decided to go to the National Gardens and watch the sunset from the Philopappos Monument. On the way to the gardens, we passed the Hellenic Parliament&nbsp;at the perfect time to watch the changing of the guards! They change every hour in Syntagma Square, where they are centered around the tomb of the unknown soldier. This tomb is for all the soldiers who died at war who were either not found or unrecognizable. They also have a more elaborate ceremony on Sundays. This was something on my list that I wanted to see, and I&#8217;m glad it fit perfectly in our schedule. Since we are here for so long, it is nice to have the time to see some of the &#8220;less popular&#8221; attractions and really experience the culture!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Continuing, we wandered in the gardens for a few hours. We all thought it was going to be a little bit bigger, but it still didn&#8217;t disappoint! We enjoyed looking at the turtle and fish ponds and all the fresh flowers. We then sat down on a bench and enjoyed the view as we were waiting for sunset to start our hike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the way to the hill, we stopped at McDonald&#8217;s again to get a sweet treat! Once we were satisfied, we started the journey to Philopappos Monument. We felt like no matter what the hill had in store, we could do it after our last hike! Thankfully, this one was not nearly as bad, and we would all 100% do it again! It had the most beautiful views of the Acropolis, the city, and the beach!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After sunset, we went back to the hostel and enjoyed another relaxing night. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 9: Today, we had plans to go to Lake Vouliagmeni, a lake that is heated with natural underground hot springs! However, with not everyone getting back from their placements until around 2:30 and an hour commute to get there, we decided to just go to the beach! This way, Abby could also join us, and it was free. Before we headed out, when Ava got back from her placement&#8230; she was convinced she had bed bugs because of how bad her mosquito bites were! The manager at her placement had mentioned it, and then she started freaking out, even though we all knew it was just the bug bites&#8230; Once she was able to have peace of mind, we headed off to the beach! We got there around 4:30 but we stayed until 7. It was only a 30-minute commute from our hostel, which is much shorter than I was expecting!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, back at the hostel, we ate dinner and talked with some of the new volunteers. It was almost all of their first days at their placements, so it was exciting to hear about what they are doing and how they&#8217;re feeling about everything!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Abby and I have also been having some trouble with our placement. It isn&#8217;t what we were expecting, and we aren&#8217;t getting much information from them. We only go in person once a week, so we aren&#8217;t getting to know what their work culture is like, and we don&#8217;t feel like we are directly impacting the community as much as some of the other programs. We are excited for a volunteer trip that we are taking this Thursday, though, to hopefully feel more involved and meet some new people!<\/p>\n\n\n<style &amp; 11<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 10: Today was the second time Abby and I were actually going to our placement. We actually knew where we were going this time, so it made the trip getting there a little easier! Once we arrived, we worked on outreaching to a few more universities in the U.S., expanding our search to include public schools. We still aren&#8217;t in love with our placement and would love a little more interaction with the locals, but we are trying to make the best of it and help where we can. We were there from 12 &#8211; 2:30, so when we got back to the hostel, we got lunch and then rested a little before heading to the Acropolis Museum!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The museum was so amazing! It was incredible to see how they were able to build the Parthenon and all the things they have discovered. My favorite part was the small diagrams they had that showed the transformation of the Acropolis Hill and how each section was used. There was also a civilization under the museum that you are able to walk through. It explained what each room was, and it is crazy to think this is how people used to live. In the museum, they had a free audio tour that we took advantage of. It was interesting to hear more about some of the artifacts and gain more knowledge before we actually go and see them! There were also amazing views at the top of the museum, looking at the Acropolis! After a few hours at the museum, we headed out to town to pick up a few more souvenirs!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back at the hostel, after dinner, we headed down to the bar for some karaoke! This was such a fun event where we could all just hang out and enjoy the evening. It wasn&#8217;t too crowded, so it was perfect, and we were the only ones singing! It was great to experience this because last week we came down right as the bar was closing. I have loved making these little memories, and the people here with us have made all the difference. It&#8217;s crazy to think we have only known most of them for a max of 2 weeks, and how close we have all gotten. It is going to be sad when we all have to part ways, but I&#8217;m so happy I met them here! I love seeing how where we come from has made each of us different, yet we still have things in common. It was a great way to end the night about halfway through the trip!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 11: Today was one of my favorite days so far! We had an early wake-up time to catch the metro, where we were meeting Kira for the bus. We were headed to Marathon to help Smile of a Child clean up their summer house! They have this house where children can come for a vacation during the summer. I think this is an amazing opportunity that they have within the organization, and it presents a unique experience. It helps the children feel more &#8220;normal&#8221; knowing that they can go on vacation and spend time hanging out with their friends. It is located right next to the beach, so in the summer, they can spend all day soaking up the sun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After about 30 minutes on the metro, we got to the bus station. (The metro was a traumatic experience because I got stuck in the metro doors! The metro was so full, no one had anywhere to go, and the doors just closed on me! I was smooshed! Not gonna lie&#8230; it hurt a little, but was also very funny. Once everyone squished together, we were on the way!) We had a few minutes before the bus left, so we all ran over to the McDonald&#8217;s to get a breakfast sandwich and coffee! This was much needed for the long day we had ahead of us. We then got on the bus, which was about an hour ride, before getting off and getting into a taxi. This was a little bit of a confusion, but we all ended up getting there safely! When we got out of the taxi, none of us knew where we were because Kira didn&#8217;t fit in with us! It seemed like we were in the middle of nowhere lol, but once she got there, we were on our way and felt much better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The house sleeps about 8 children at a time and has a porch, back yard, kitchen, two bathrooms, and a living room. Although it is nothing special, it has all the necessities, and the volunteers do their best to make it look nice! Today, our task was to paint the railings on the porch. There were about 12 of us working on the painting while a few of the other volunteers were collecting leaves and weeds from the back yard. It took us about 3 hours to do the whole thing, and the good thing was that they had paint remover because we got some on the floor, oops! It was a great time overall because we had music going, and it was nice talking to some of the local volunteers! While talking with them, they asked us what the weirdest thing they do is, and another thing we had thought was interesting, but we enjoyed it. I liked this question because it gave me some time to reflect on what I have done and seen since being here. They even got us some pastries for lunch and new juice to try! It was so yummy, and the pomegranate juice we tried was a 10\/10!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we were done painting, we all walked down to the beach for the rest of the afternoon before the bus came at 6. It was so hot out that it felt like we were &#8220;sandwiches in a panini press!&#8221; &#8211; Dayna. The water was so perfect, though! It is so clear, and the bottom was so soft! We love that off the coast of the beaches, you can see mountains, because it is a cool change of scenery from what we have at home.<\/p>\n\n\n<style &amp; 13<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 12: Today was Ava&#8217;s last day \ud83d\ude41 We wanted to spend some time at the beach because this is one of her favorite things! While we were waiting for her to get back from her placement, Dayna, Abby, and I headed out to do some shopping! We went to a swimsuit store because Dayna had packed only one for the whole trip. I ended up not getting anything, but Dayna and Abby found some really cute things. On our way back to the hostel, we wanted to get Ava some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?sca_esv=813765718ccf2407&amp;sxsrf=AE3TifMerojlwjt2RJ3RLAtpqLi6Z7G-xQ:1749548490980&amp;q=TouLoumpakias&amp;nfpr=1&amp;sa=X&amp;ved=2ahUKEwi3y8mCyOaNAxVfRfEDHZEgKh8QvgUoAXoECA0QAg\">TouLoumpakias<\/a> (sticky balls) as a going-away gift. They are a super yummy dough soaked in a sugar syrup! The bakery we went to ended up not having any, so we got her a small milk chocolate cake instead!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we got back for lunch, Ava was getting back too, so she enjoyed her sweet treat, and then we all headed to the beach! It has been so hot the last few days that even lying on the beach isn&#8217;t the best. The sand gets so hot, and you have to go farther out in the ocean for the water to feel cold. We are usually dripping sweat while lying on the sand, but you gotta do whatcha gotta do&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a few hours on the beach, we did some research to find where we wanted to eat dinner. We ended up going to Akakios Pasta, where we had the best pasta ever! I got pasta with thick noodles and a creamy sauce with chunks of zucchini and pork. It was so good!! After the pasta, they brought us a small glass with some frozen lemon drink in it that&#8230; dare I say was better than a frosted lemonade from Chick-fil-A! As we were finishing up dinner, Abby got a phone call&#8230; She had been expecting a care package from her ex&#8217;s dad all day, but little did she know her ex was the care package! The even crazier thing is that she had blocked him on everything while he was on the plane&#8230; so he landed with no way to contact her! Once she knew he was here, she wanted to get back to the hostel as fast as possible, so we all split an Uber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we were back, we debriefed everyone about what had just happened and then relaxed for the rest of the night and said bye to Ava \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I also planned a tour to Delphi on Sunday!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 13: Dayna and I both thought it was best to sleep in and have a very chill day today. We wanted to have a slow morning and then go to Acropoli and do some souvenir shopping as we are getting down to our last week of being here! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was another hot day, so we enjoyed ducking into the shops with AC! We did some damage to our wallets but found almost everything we were looking for! It was nice to look around at some shops we hadn&#8217;t seen before and enjoy a slow day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we got back to the hostel, everything on Dayna&#8217;s bed was gone! We went down to the reception to figure everything out, and it turns out they thought we were leaving after 2 weeks instead of 3&#8230; So they told us we were going to have to change rooms for our last 6 nights into a mixed room, and there was nothing they could do about it. We let Kira know, and she said she would do what she could on Monday, as it was only Saturday and most people weren&#8217;t working on the weekends. After being frustrated, we realized it wasn&#8217;t the end of the world, and we were just going to see what happened in the next 2 days.<\/p>\n\n\n<style fa-angle-right\"><\/i><\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Day 14 &amp; 15<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 14: Sunday morning, we woke up bright and early to get on the bus to Delphi at 8:15. The metro took a little longer than we thought to get there, so we had to hustle to get on! However, it ended up not even mattering because the bus left almost an hour late anyway&#8230; Once we finally got on the road, it was about 3 hours to Delphi with one coffee stop on the way. It was nice to see parts of Greece that weren&#8217;t just the city. It is very mountainous, which I wasn&#8217;t expecting, with lots of valleys where people live and farm. I also did not realize that Delphi was on the side of a mountain! As we were approaching, it was very exciting to see all the houses on the side of the mountain and imagine how they used to travel to get here without roads. That&#8217;s when our tour guide told us that eventually, they started taking boats to get to Delphi as it was a much easier way to travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our tour guide then took us all around the archaeological sites, where we learned about how each region had its own offering temple. We then saw the Temple of Apollo, the naval (believed to be the center of the earth), the theater, and hiked all the way up to the stadium! This is where they had their own &#8220;Olympic Games,&#8221; and the winner would get a crown made out of laurel instead of olive branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now that we were sufficiently sweating trying to race all the way to the top before our time slot in the museum, the tour guide showed us some of the most interesting things in the museum and where they came from! It was nice to have some background knowledge about how and where they found the artifacts instead of having to figure it out ourselves! After about an hour in the museum, we headed down into the town to get some lunch!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of the restaurants here were a little more expensive, as the tour guide told us that this is where rich Greeks come for the winter months to ski. However, we were able to find some reasonably priced Gyros and were able to leave with full bellies and FREE WATER! Making our way back to the bus, we went into a cute jewelry store where I got two bracelets to remember my time in Delphi!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the bus, we ended up changing our seats and talking to two guys who had been traveling Europe together. We talked to them about our volunteer programs and what we have done so far in Greece! This was their first day here, so we were able to give them some insightful tips as well! They were here doing some research about wildfires, so it was cool to hear about someone else&#8217;s experiences and why they were here. It definitely helped pass the time on the way home!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Back at the hostel, we had to move into our new room&#8230; When we opened the door, no one said anything to us \ud83d\ude41 It was a little awkward, but luckily, we had each other and just tried to make the best of the situation. We spend most of the night back in our old room before getting ready for bed and being back in our new room&#8230; This was an interesting night to say the least. The seats in the bathroom were always up. Some guy was farting all night (Dayna and I could barely keep it together and not die of laughter), and it was so clean and silent. We were comparing it to a sterile hospital instead of the summer camp vibes we were used to \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 15: On Monday, everyone had off from their placements as it was a holiday, Whit Monday. Kira told us this was a holiday only for people with &#8220;high intellectual&#8221; jobs, and it is a kind of Pentecost for them. We were happy to have the day off, though, because we missed Memorial Day back in the States!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We decided to have another beach day even though we knew we would be cooking laying on the beach! We got there around 12:30 and spent a lot of time in the water because of how hot it had been. It was nice to spend time with the whole group, though, because often times we are split up. The water is so clear here, and there are no waves. Normally, I wouldn&#8217;t like the no-waves part, but it has actually been really enjoyable! The sand is so hot, and there are some rocks, so the bottom of our feet were hurting by the end of the day!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 4, Dayna and I decided to head back, and it took about an hour to get back from the beach \ud83d\ude41 We had never tried getting back on our own from the beach before, so this was definitely a learning experience with the tram and bus schedules. We were able to finally make it back, got some lunch, took showers, and had a nap! Kira was also able to get us back into our original room, so we get to move back in on Tuesday!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we were recharged, we headed into Mostraki to look around for some more souvenirs and get some gelato! We were both successful in finding a few more gifts&#8230; however, we&#8217;re not quite sure how they are all going to fit in our suitcases for the way home&#8230; but this is a later problem! I got orange chocolate gelato, and it was so yummy!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We then came back for dinner and hung out in our old room before going down a floor for our last night in the new room! <\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Day 16 &amp; 17<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 16: Today, we went to the Panathenaic Stadium! It is the stadium of the first modern Olympic Games and was first built around 330 BCE&nbsp;under Lycurgus&nbsp;for the Panathenaic Games and was later rebuilt in marble by Herodes Atticus&nbsp;in the 2nd century CE.&nbsp;They were setting it up for some event, so that skewed the experience a little, but overall it was really cool! We wanted to just take in the views and enjoy the experience, as it was, we were getting closer and closer to going home. As we were walking around the lower level, we found the tunnel that is used for enterenes! After walking into it, we discovered a whole other area all about its history. It also had a torch from every Olympic game, which I thought was the coolest part!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once we were done exploring, we got slushies at the concessions stand and decided to sit on a bench. Here, we reflected on our time spent in Greece so far and still can&#8217;t wrap our heads around how were actually IN GREECE! This has been such an incredible experience, and we&#8217;re so happy we got to enjoy it with each other \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walking back to the train station, we had decided we wanted to meet up with some of the other girls for our last beach visit! Surprisingly, we saw a ton of taxis in the middle of the road! We then realized that there was a taxi strike, and they all parked in the middle of the road! It was quite the site but we didn&#8217;t have much time to observe because we wanted to make it to the beach in time for the sunset!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sunset was amazing, and we enjoyed a late-night swim and hanging out with the other girls. Had to take pics on the digital too!! Then, as always, it took forever to get back from the beach. We were glad we got to squeeze in one last beach trip, as our time here is coming to an end. When we got back to the hostel, we hung out with everyone in our room and had a little movie night to end the day, bonding with everyone \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 17:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today was a pretty chill day. We took some time to go back to the Academy of Athens since the last time it was closed. Unfortunately, it was also closed today, but it was still good to go back and get some more pictures \ud83d\ude42 After we went into the city, we looked around and did some shopping. We got Gyros for dinner that night and ended with some karaoke!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doing karaoke at night with everyone has been one of the funnest activities! It&#8217;s such a great way to vibe and hang out with everyone in a fun environment. This will definitely be one aspect of the trip that I will never forget!<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Day 18 &amp; 19<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 18: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 19:<\/p>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<details class=\"wp-block-details is-layout-flow wp-block-details-is-layout-flow\"><summary>Day 20<\/summary>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Day 20: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traveling home \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We actually pulled an all-nighter since we had to leave the hostel around 4am for our flight at 8am. I slept the entire 9-hour flight home, which was some much-needed rest. It was very easy to get through security and customs in Greece.
